Wintertime Fun in Oscoda
A prime location for cross-country skiers, you’ll find a variety of trails that will appeal to all skill levels. The Highbanks Trails is a linear trail along the scenic AuSable River bluff. Skiers and snowshoers travel along the same trails used by the loggers, in the day, to roll their timber into the river. Covering 14 miles, the trail is marked, but not groomed and is ideal for the beginner or intermediate skier. The view of mixed hardwood and pines from the Highlands Trail Lookout is spectacular on a cold and crisp winter day. The Eagle Run Trail is only two miles west of Oscoda on River Road. Offering 11 miles of trails, you’ll find a number of groomed loops of different lengths and difficulties. For the more avid and skilled skier, the Hoist Lake Trails offer longer loops and steeper hills creating an exhilarating adventure in the Huron National Forest. For more information about the trails and conditions contact the Huron Ranger District at 989-739-0728.
For those not into skiing or snowshoeing, but just want to have some wintertime fun, head to Sled Hill located in Old Orchard Park and take a few rides down the groomed sled hills. This is home to the annual Snowbox Derby held in February.
