Travel A Tawas Biking Trail
Get outside, off-road, and on to the paths this October on Tawas’s Alabaster Bike Path Arboretum and the Tawas Bay Bike Trail. The 13.4-mile trail, its two sections cloaked in a canopy of the red, orange, and yellow colors of fall, creates an absolutely breathtaking sightseeing excursion. With start and finish trailheads within dense forest, and a middle section providing panoramic views of the area, this two-section biking trail is a scenic journey alongside the blue water and under the blue skies of Tawas Bay—the fall foliage colors just give it a little something extra.
Beginning at the Tawas Point State Park lighthouse, the Tawas Bay Bike Trail travels around the northern shore of the bay and down the edge of Tawas Beach Road. The trail then uses widened sidewalks and asphalt paths to travel through East Tawas and Tawas City. You’ll pass by several marinas, parks, and beaches that provide easy access to the trail as well, so if the ample parking at the lighthouse isn’t worth the extra biking, feel free to start your adventure here. Make sure to stay safe while also enjoying the scenery, and don’t hesitate to stop for a bite to eat!
Shortly after Tawas City, continue your journey on the 6.5 miles Alabaster Bike Path Arboretum. You’ll find easy riding on this smooth asphalt trail; the no motor vehicles policy ensures you will have a peaceful bike ride through those famous Michigan forests that have turned into the vivid colors of autumn. The trail features a collection of 150 labeled trees along the way as well as a landmark boulder-sized chunk of gypsum at the Dyer Road trailhead—this mineral’s finest grade is better known as alabaster. The most recent addition to the trail, completed in 2015, offers the most scenic views of the trail and bay, but it’s also further away from the Huron House and the lighthouse where you may have parked.
