Signs of Spring in Oscoda, Michigan
As winter loosens its grip on northern Michigan, the signs of spring begin to emerge, bringing with them a sense of renewal and anticipation. Along the shores of Lake Huron, Oscoda experiences the gradual transition from winter's icy embrace to the gentle warmth of spring. From the melting snow to the budding flora, the awakening of nature paints a picturesque scene for our springtime guests at Huron House.
The return of migratory birds is an unmistakable sign of spring in Oscoda. As song birds, water birds and raptors make their way north, you'll be able to catch a glimpse of a variety of bird species. Birdwatchers flock to places all along the Sunrise Coast Birding Trail to see trushes, orioles and smaller warblers to larger birds of prey such as hawks and eagles. Plus, this area is one of the few habitats for the endangered Kirkland's Warbler. In mid-May, be sure to check out the AuSable Valley Audubon’s Bird Migration Days.
Winter's transition into spring means below-freezing nights and warmer days — the perfect conditions for collecting maple sap. Michigan ranks fifth in the nation for maple syrup production, the state's oldest agricultural activity. Each year, the Michigan Maple Syrup Association invites people to explore and enjoy this pure Michigan sweet treat during Michigan Maple Weekend in late March. Participating sugar houses offer activities such as farm tours, tree-tapping demonstrations and maple product sampling.
A hike in the woods is a great way to see Oscoda's natural beauty in springtime. Head to the Highbanks River Trail in the Huron National Forest, a truly special place with sand dunes, forests, springs, monuments and amazing Au Sable River views. In early spring, before the trees are in full bloom, this 7-mile trail along the river's bluffs provides unobstructed dramatic views of the river valley below. The trail can be accessed at numerous spots, one of the most popular being the Visitor’s Center at Lumberman’s Monument.
After you've viewed the AuSable River from its bluffs, head down to the water to do a little spring fly fishing. The AuSable is a great destination for steelhead fishing during the majority of the year, but spring is a peak time, with the biggest run of fish from March through May. In Oscoda, you will find the section from Foote Dam to Lake Huron to be not only a prime site for spring angling, but also for its beauty and serenity, offering a quiet escape from the stressful things in life. If you need rods, reels, flies, waders or other equipment, stop in at Wellman's Sport Center in Oscoda, who will hook you up with everything you need.
If you've got cabin fever and are ready to get back outdoors, don't wait until summer to plan your getaway to our lakeside retreat. Come see Oscoda as it awakens from its winter slumber with longer days, milder weather, and the enduring beauty of nature that awaits you this spring.
