See Vibrant Fall Colors along the River Road Scenic Byway
Now that summer's heat has given way to the crisp coolness of autumn, Northern Michigan's landscape is transforming into a breathtaking symphony of colors. One of the best ways to immerse yourself in this seasonal spectacle during your Oscoda getaway is by taking a drive along the River Road Scenic Byway and making a few stops to enjoy the scenery. This 22-mile route follows the Au Sable River westward from Lake Huron into the Huron-Manistee National Forests, where you are surrounded by dense trees ablaze in glorious red, orange and gold. It is truly one of Michigan's most picturesque driving routes.
The River Road Scenic Byway takes travelers past unspoiled wilderness, abundant wildlife, and a multitude of recreation areas for hiking, biking, boating, fishing, camping, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. At one time, it was a Native American travel route, and later a trade and transportation route for Michigan's white pine. Today, travelers can get learn more about this lumbering history by stopping at the Lumberman's Monument Visitors Center at the heart of the scenic byway.
While the River Road Scenic Byway is a treat in itself, one of its most alluring stops is the Foote Pond Overlook. Located roughly halfway along the byway, the overlook is situated atop a steep sand bluff that's known locally as Champagne Hill for its champagne glass shape. It provides a stunning panoramic view of Foote Pond and the Au Sable River Valley below that is nothing short of awe-inspiring, especially in the fall. The river, flanked by an array of deciduous trees, mirrors the vibrant hues of the forest in its gentle waters. You might even see eagles nesting in those trees, as well. Be sure to snap a few pictures from the observation deck, because this is one of Northern Michigan's most Instagram-worthy scenes.
Another notable stopping point along the River Road Scenic Byway is Iargo Springs. This interpretive site allows you to get up close with these peaceful natural springs. The sound of trickling water running over the dams and small waterfalls provides a tranquil ambiance. There are several observation decks, as well as an elevated wooden boardwalk that winds roughly 1,000 feet around the beautiful springs. If you're feeling adventurous, hike down the 294 steps to see where the underground waters emerge to form cold-water streams.
After a day of autumn exploration, return to the Huron House for a bit of pampering. Relax in the warmth of your room's fireplace, soak in a whirlpool tub and enjoy a glass of wine on your private deck that looks out over Lake Huron. We think you'll agree that our bed-and-breakfast in Oscoda is the epitome of lakeside luxury and the perfect place to savor the adventures of your fall journey on the River Road Scenic Byway.
