River Road Byway Named One of Most Scenic Drives in U.S.
We've always known that the River Road National Scenic Byway is something special. This 22-mile route along the historic Au Sable River takes travelers past unspoiled wilderness, abundant wildlife and a multitude of recreation areas. Now, we're not the only ones in awe of the tranquility and natural beauty along this Northern Michigan drive. A leading travel publication is letting its readers know just how spectacular River Road truly is.
Big Seven Travel recently released its list of the most scenic drives in each state and named the River Road National Scenic Byway as Michigan’s best for 2021. The editors wrote, “With the road itself running parallel to the historic Au Sable River, there’s plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy along the route, as well as lush forest and breathtaking vistas from the many scenic overlooks.”
River Road was given National Forest Scenic Byway status in 1988, and National Scenic Byway status in 2005. It travels westward from Lake Huron into the Huron-Manistee National Forests and was first a Native American travel route, and later a trade and transportation route for Michigan's white pine. Today, travelers can get learn more about this lumbering history by stopping at the Lumberman's Monument Visitors Center at the heart of the scenic byway.
