Pick Your Own Sweet Michigan Blueberries
Blueberry season is something we look forward to every summer in Michigan. This time of year, fresh Michigan blueberries star in our scratch-made breakfasts at Huron House – in pancakes, scones, muffins and more. Our state ranks third in the nation in blueberry production (behind Washington and Georgia), growing more than 30 different varieties of blueberries and harvesting 92 million pounds annually. That's impressive!
While most of Michigan’s blueberries are grown in Southwest Michigan, where the high water tables and sandy soil provide excellent growing conditions, Tawas Blueberry Farm in Tawas City has found four blueberry bush varieties that do particularly well this far north: Northland, Earliblue, Toro and Patriot. Formerly known as Czaika's Blueberry Farm, they've been in continuous operation for nearly 70 years. Land was hand-cleared for the farm in the 1950s, and in the 1970s, Joe Czaika Sr. became a test farmer for Michigan State's blueberry studies. In October 2019, Nathan and Cindi Payne purchased the farm from the Czaika family, and today continue as good stewards of the land.
Tawas Blueberry Farm allows visitors to pick their own blueberries during a very short harvest season in late July and August. When you head to the farm, you can bring your own containers for picking or borrow their buckets with plastic liners. There are six acres for prime picking! Blueberries bruise easily, so handle them gently. During the season, Tawas Blueberry Farm is open for picking on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Because blueberry picking season is weather dependant, keep an eye on their Facebook page for details about when to plan your pick-your-own adventure.
