Paul Bunyan Days
Whether he was real or not is up for debate, but the character of Paul Bunyan found in the backwoods folklore of America is one of superhuman strength, skill, and size, and the man may have been born and raised right here in Oscoda. In 1906, the Oscoda Press published a collection of stories about Paul Bunyan, the first time the tall tales were put in print, and the following year the state of Michigan named Oscoda the “Official Home of Paul Bunyan”.
Today, Oscoda still celebrates the legendary character with its annual Paul Bunyan Days tradition. The celebration includes a lumberjack show, chainsaw carving contest, a carnival, arts and crafts vendors, a classic car show, pie eating contest, and more. Watch the chainsaw carving demonstrations at select times during the festival and then vote on your favorite piece of chainsaw art. Also at Furtaw Field overlooking the festival that bears his name is the thirteen-foot statue of Paul Bunyan, originally a papier-maché float in a parade in 1971.
The Annual Paul Bunyan Days festival will be held September 20-22 at Furtaw Field.
