Northern Michigan's Beautiful Winter Views
The Beauty of Iargo Springs and Lumberman's Monument, MI
In any season, nothing calms the spirit quite like a trek through the great outdoors. But there's something special about experiencing Oscoda's natural landmarks in the frosty white winter. With panoramic views of the majestic AuSable River, these two stops on the River Road Scenic Byway each provide a unique sense of peace in the chill of winter.
Iargo Springs are natural springs used as a drinking water source since pre-settlement days. The sound of trickling water running over the dams and small waterfalls provides a tranquil ambiance. There are several observation decks, as well as an elevated wooden boardwalk that winds roughly 1,000 feet around the beautiful springs. If you're feeling adventurous, hike down the 294 steps to see where the underground waters emerge to form cold-water streams.
From Iargo Springs, venture 4 miles east on the Highbanks Trail that hugs the river on the way to the Lumberman's Monument. The monument itself, erected in 1932, is a 14-foot bronze statue that commemorates the area's rich lumberjacking history. The overlook here is simply breathtaking, and the natural beauty of the magnificent Au Sable River Valley will blow you away. From the scenic overlook area, you can take 260 stairs all the way down to the river.
