The Most Colorful Way to Experience Michigan's Fall Season
A drive along the River Road National Scenic Byway that extends westward 22 miles from historic Oscoda, MI into the Huron-Manistee National Forest is one of Michigan’s many scenic byways. On your journey, you’ll find magnificent fall foliage and numerous ways to view the awesome autumn spectacle.
Enjoy the forest from several scenic overlooks along the way. As you enjoy the brilliant shades of red, yellow and orange, watch for wildlife. Or, stop and hike one of the many quiet trails such as the Eagle Run Trail (6.8 miles) or the Highbanks River Trail (7 miles).
At the center of the byway, learn about the lumbering history of the forest and river at the Lumberman’s Monument Visitor Center. Once there, the Forest Discovery Trail is a short .6-mile trail that offers interpretative signage and leads to an observation deck. It is a great opportunity to enjoy the lush forest and its array of colors.
You’ll follow River Road and the M-65 that run parallel to the Au Sable River. Some suggested stops include:
