One of the world’s most unique wineries is one of Michigan’s own, and it’s right down the road from the Huron House. With flavors like Raspcream, Peach Ring, Nightberry, and White Ice Lightning, Modern Craft Winery has fruity, sweet homemade wines guaranteed to tingle your tastebuds. Modern Craft makes its home—and its homemade fruit wines—in Au Gres, Michigan, a town about forty minutes south via US 23. It’s likely you will be travelling through this charming town on your journey to the Huron House so take the time to stop and enjoy the natural beauty, fishing, great local food, brews, pubs, wineries, golf, and more.
If you head north of the Huron House along US 23 North, you’ll find one of Modern Craft’s several tasting rooms in Harrisville, another small lake town that has constructed its buildings between the outer edge of the Huron-Manistee National Forest and the shores of Lake Huron. The difference between the two is a fifteen minute longer trip down to Au Gres, but you’ll be at Modern Craft’s home winery and all the options and activities Au Gres has to offer like ice fishing, lighthouses, and kayaking.
Harrisville’s tasting room is a unique showcase of this business’s wines, though, with a vibrant display of color alongside the eye-catching pine tasting table and a hand-hammered copper sink. Visit the “Mixperience Room” in Harrisville to enjoy one of Modern Craft’s most unusual traits: the fruit wines mix great together and even mix well with beer.
I’d recommend taking the drive. This winery is an up-and-coming showstopper in the business and the opportunity to visit the home base of Modern Craft will only come as many times as you stay with us (so, hopefully often). Visit the
website to learn about how this winery came about, why they’re so successful, and why their homemade wines are so delicious.
