Pure Maple Sugar - Irresistibly Delicious!
Michigan has a rich history of maple syrup that dates back to Native Americans. It is one of nature’s wonders. Collecting maple sap, used to produce the syrup, can only be done a few weeks in Spring or Fall. The best time to tap the maple trees for sap is when there are periods of freezing and thawing in order to get the sap flowing within the sugar maple tree.
March is the best time of year when the temperatures are rising above freezing and the sap begins to flow rapidly. It is also a sign that Spring is on its way. Michigan Maple Weekend is held March 21 and 22 in the Northern Lower Michigan. The closest sugarhouse to Oscoda is the Miller Brothers Maple Products located at 295 W. Kneeland Road in Mio, MI about an hour drive northwest. Open on March 21 from 10 am to 4 pm, you will have the opportunity to see how trees are tapped and the sap harvested into a variety of products such as syrup, maple candy, maple cream and more. You’ll be able to purchase products, get recipes and cooking suggestions.
Brothers Daniel and Paul Miller along with their father produce about a 1,000 gallons of syrup a year depending upon the season. They use a combination of tubing from tree to tree and buckets to collect the sap from over 2,500 trees.
