The Lighthouse State: Visit Three of Michigan's Guiding Lights
Every August, National Lighthouse Month shines a light on these iconic structures that have guided ships and sailors for centuries. Michigan, with its extensive coastline along the Great Lakes, boasts a remarkable collection of lighthouses — more than any other state! There are several maps and guides that will lead you on a journey to view Michigan's beautiful beacons of light. We suggest you start your lighthouse exploration not far from Huron House by checking out Tawas Point Lighthouse, Sturgeon Point Lighthouse and Charity Island Lighthouse. Each of these historic maritime treasures makes a great day trip when you stay at our romantic bed-and-breakfast.
At Tawas Point Lighthouse, visitors are treated to stunning views of Lake Huron and Tawas Bay and the opportunity to step back in time as they explore the lighthouse's preserved interior. The lighthouse went into operation in 1876 and continued to serve as a beacon until 2016, when it was decommissioned by the U.S. Coast Guard. Today, it functions as a museum and is available for seasonal tours. The towering white structure, topped with a distinctive black lantern room, offers a glimpse into the challenges faced by lighthouse keepers in the past. Its location within Tawas Point State Park also provides visitors with the chance to enjoy pristine beaches, hiking trails and birdwatching.
Travel north along the Lake Huron shoreline to Harrisville, Michigan, and you'll find Sturgeon Point Lighthouse. Built in 1870, this historic lighthouse is open during the summer season for tours. You can climb the spiral staircase to the top of the 70-foot structure to witness breathtaking vistas of the rugged coastline and sparkling lake waters. The Fresnel lens is still in the tower, although it's no longer in operation. Instead, the U.S. Coast Guard monitors an LED light to assist recreational watercraft. After you explore the inside of the lighthouse and its lantern room, be sure to check out the lighthouse keeper's house, which has been restored as a maritime museum.
For those seeking an adventure off the beaten path, the Charity Island Lighthouse offers a unique experience. Situated on a secluded island in Lake Huron, this lighthouse transports visitors back to a time when life was simpler and more remote. Reaching the island involves a 1-hour boat ride, making the journey itself an exciting part of the adventure. Your trip begins aboard the 34-passenger "Miss Charity Isle," which departs from Au Gres. Once on the island, visitors can enjoy a picnic lunch in the pavilion before exploring the lighthouse, its grounds and the pristine natural beauty that surrounds it.
As the No. 1 lighthouse state in the U.S., Michigan is the perfect place to celebrate National Lighthouse Month. Book a cozy suite at our lakeside bed-and-breakfast, and then set off on your exploration of these towering nautical landmarks. The Tawas Point, Sturgeon Point and Charity Island lighthouses, having kept watch over Lake Huron for centuries, continue to amaze us with their sweeping views and natural splendor and remind us of the importance of preserving our maritime heritage for generations to come.
