Lake Huron's Haunted Lighthouses
Michigan is home to more lighthouses than any other state, with 129 lighthouses along thousands of miles of coastline. These beautiful beacons of light and history hold the stories of the lightkeepers who watched over them and the sailors who were guided by their light. Would you be surprised to learn, then, that some of them might be haunted?
We've heard a few tales about mysterious spirits at lighthouses along Lake Huron. It's reported that Sturgeon Point Lighthouse in Harrisville once had a ghost that carried a dim light up the stairs to the tower at night. Thunder Bay Lighthouse in Alpena is said to be haunted by the spirit of a former lightkeeper who died of loneliness. And there have been strange occurrences at the Old Presque Isle Lighthouse in Presque Isle that are said to be the work of a long-departed museum caretaker.
Whether you believe these spooky legends or not, visiting these historic lighthouses is a fun adventure during Halloween or any time of year!
We haven't heard any haunted tales about the Tawas Point Lighthouse in East Tawas, but every year they celebrate the season with some ghostly fun. The lighthouse is an easy 20-minute drive south of Huron House along the Lake Huron coastline. During the annual Haunted Weekend, set for October 7-8, it will be adorned with skeletons, ghosts, cobwebs, bats and more. The popular two-day fall festival features free hayrides, lighthouse tours, pumpkin painting, games and activities. On Friday, visitors get a once-a-year opportunity to climb the lighthouse tower at night, perfect for enjoying a moonlit view of Tawas Bay. On Saturday, dance the night away under a nearly full moon at the Monster Mash Dance with a DJ spinning the tunes. Dress up if you dare!
Please note: Tawas Point Lighthouse is located within Tawas Point State Park. So while the event itself is free, visitors will need a recreation passport for vehicle entry to the state park.
