Hike the Huron National Forest for the Best Fall Foliage Views
The fall season is underway and soon Michigan will be blanketed in the vibrant warm colors of autumn. During your stay with us, plan an excursion into the nearby Huron National Forest for some of the best leaf-peeping in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. Follow the forest’s many miles of trails along the National Scenic Byway of the Au Sable River, its surrounding ridges, and its rolling hills to discover the region’s best vantage points for viewing the vibrant colors of the fall season.
Start your day at Iargo Springs, the incredible Native American sacred site that now serves as a trailhead, located just 15 miles west of Oscoda. The site also features a 30’ observation deck overlooking Cooke Dam Pond which is a must-see before hitting the Highbanks Trail.
The Highbanks Trail is a 6.5-mile hike along the Au Sable River that uses the same routes loggers once used to roll their timber into the river. On the Highbanks Trail, you’ll find dramatic panoramic views of the deep blue water of the Au Sable River contrasted with the reds, yellows, and oranges of the Huron National Forest.
The Lumberman’s Monument, besides being a historic landmark, is an excellent place to take a break and take in the view. If you packed a picnic, this is a great spot to admire the beautiful landscape and relax and eat. Nearby, Sand Dune Overlook is another great spot for a picnic and travels right through sandy side of the Au Sable’s signature steep banks. Here, you’ll have an open-air, panoramic view of the river, forest, and horizon that is completely unforgettable.
