Flock to Tawas Point for Bird Migration Days
Birdwatching is a fascinating hobby — a great way to connect with nature, relax and appreciate the beauty of birds in their natural habitat. Northeast Michigan, along the shore of Lake Huron, is a natural birding hot spot in the spring, as migrating birds follow the shoreline to summer nesting sites. Plan a getaway with us at Huron House this spring for your chance to see songbirds, water birds and raptors as they make their way north.
A perfect time for bird lovers to visit is during the AuSable Valley Audubon’s Bird Migration Days in mid-May. This annual event, now in its 16th year, brings together birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts from all over the country. Formerly known as the Tawas Point Birding Festival, it takes place at Tawas Point State Park during the peak of the spring migration, when thousands of birds pass through this region as they make their way to their breeding grounds in the northern U.S. and Canada. In 2023, this two-day event is set for May 12 and 13.
Bird Migration Days offers a unique opportunity for participants to learn about birds and observe them in their natural environment. You'll be able to catch a glimpse of a variety of bird species — from smaller warblers, thrushes and orioles to larger birds of prey such as hawks and eagles. At various stations around the state park, expert guides will answer questions about species identification, bird behavior and habitat, the local ecology and more. Multiple feeding stations with seed and orange slices will be popular stopping points in your birding pursuits. Through the years, this event also has featured guided bird walks, photography workshops, live bird shows and banding demonstrations.
While Bird Migration Days is a free event, you will need a Michigan Recreation Passport for vehicle entry into Tawas Point State Park. For your convenience, daily and annual passports can be purchased right at the state park.
Tawas Point isn't the only place for prime bird watching during the spring migration. While you're at the park, pick up information on other popular birding spots throughout Iosco County, including Tuttle Marsh, Iargo Springs, Lumberman's Monument and the River Road Scenic Byway.
