The Festival of Sail: A Maritime Spectacle in Alpena
When it comes to celebrating the rich maritime history the Great Lakes, few events can match the grandeur and charm of the Festival of Sail in Alpena. Nestled on the picturesque shores of Lake Huron in Michigan, Alpena comes alive each year as majestic sailing vessels from around the world gather to participate in this extraordinary festival. With its captivating blend of maritime heritage and lively entertainment, the Festival of Sail is a waterfront spectacle that will leave visitors awestruck.
The 2023 Festival of Sail comes to the quaint lakeshore town of Alpena July 21-23. It's hosted by the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center, located about an hour north of Huron House. The three-day event offers a rare chance to catch a glimpse, step aboard and even set sail on some of the grandest ships of yore. There will be ship tours, day sails, educational programming, delicious food, a craft beer garden, artisans and vendors, live music, and festive entertainment for all ages.
The festival's main attraction is the stunning display of tall ships that grace the harbor. These magnificent vessels, with their towering masts and billowing sails, evoke a sense of exploration and adventure. From the graceful topsails of schooners to the commanding presence of brigantines, each ship has a story to tell. Some of the ships that have sailed to northern Michigan for the festival include the Pride of Baltimore II, Appledore IV, Noa Trinidad and the U.S. Brig Niagara. Visitors have the unique opportunity to explore these floating pieces of history, stepping aboard to experience life on the high seas as they wander through the decks and chat with the knowledgeable crew members.
For those seeking a deeper understanding of Lake Huron's maritime history, the festival provides educational opportunities through maritime exhibits, historical presentations and storytelling sessions. Visitors can learn about the region's nautical past, the importance of the Great Lakes for trade and transportation, and the role of tall ships in shaping the world.
The surprising sidekick of the Festival of Sail isn't a boat at all. It's Mama Duck, the world's largest inflatable rubber duck! Standing 61-feet high, she'll be a giant yellow presence among the majestic vessels. It takes 2.5 hours to inflate this 15.5 ton duck. She travels to waterfront festivals all over the country and will make Thunder Bay her bathtub for the duration of the three-day Festival of Sail.
The Festival of Sail in Alpena is not just an event; it's a celebration of seafaring traditions and the enduring allure of the open water. Whether you're a history enthusiast, a sailing aficionado, or simply looking for a unique and memorable experience, the Festival of Sail in Alpena promises to ignite your sense of discovery. During your July stay at Huron House, make the voyage to Alpena to witness this captivating maritime extravaganza that will transport you to a bygone era of adventure on the high seas.
