Fat Biking on Eagle Run Trail in Michigan
For couples who enjoy finding adventure together in the great outdoors, northern Michigan's snowy landscapes offer plenty of options for active outdoor dates. There's winter fun abound on world-class groomed trails within minutes from our lakeside getaway – from hiking and snowshoeing to cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. But if you want to experience a Michigan winter on wheels, fat biking is not to be missed!
Fat biking is mountain biking on a bicycle that has wide tires, between 4-5 inches, made to easily pedal across snow and ice. They're meant to be run at low tire pressure, which keeps the bike, and you, afloat on unstable terrain where normal bike tires would sink. This growing, trendy style of riding gives thrill seekers a great way to explore our winter wonderland on miles of snow-covered trails.
Just west of Oscoda, the Eagle Run Trail is perfectly maintained for fat biking. Here, seven miles of trail wind through acres of peaceful national forestland, occasionally following along the banks of the lower AuSable River. Breathtaking in any season, there's just something exhilarating about traversing the trail on two wheels in the frosted wintertime. Great for all skill levels, the Eagle Run Trail is relatively level and is groomed 6-feet wide for shared use with cross-country skiers and snowshoers. Follow proper fat-biking etiquette by riding down the center of the trails, yielding to both skiers and snowshoers.
