Fall Foliage at Foote Pond Overlook
Located at the mouth of the Au Sable River, Oscoda is known for its proximity to the huge Huron National Forest. Within its wild borders, visitors will find the River Road National Scenic Byway and all it has to offer: scenic vistas, endangered wildlife, and access to hiking and driving tours. The 22-mile road parallels the historic Au Sable River (River of Sand) providing visitors access to lush forests and breathtaking views, especially during the fall season.
Foote Pond Overlook is one of the best fall foliage viewing hot spots in the region. It’s located just nine miles west of Oscoda on River Road and has paved parking for the viewing deck and steep sand dune. The high sand bluffs overlook Foote Pond and also provide an opportunity to see the bald eagles that have called the area home since 1985. Trail markers and signs near the overlook reveal what the United States Forest Service does in an effort to protect our national bird along the Au Sable River. Enjoy the panoramic view, stop and have a picnic, and await the sight of a soaring bald eagle. For more information visit Foote Pond Overlook.
