Enjoy the Best Community Theater Along Lake Huron
When planning a getaway to Michigan's Sunrise Side, many people look for exciting activities and events to enjoy while exploring a new destination. While it's tempting to stick to popular tourist attractions, there's a hidden gem along Lake Huron that should not be overlooked: community theatre. There are two exceptional community theatre groups not far from Huron House, the Shoreline Players and the Tawas Bay Players, and attending one of their productions is a unique and memorable way to experience the local arts scene.
Community theatre is an excellent way to support local talent and get a glimpse into the heart of a community. It's an opportunity to see amateur actors come together to create something magical on stage. The performers are often volunteers who have a passion for theatre and put in countless hours of work to perfect their craft. These shows are often well-rehearsed and performed with genuine enthusiasm, making for an enjoyable and authentic entertainment experience.
An Oscoda institution since 1973, the Shoreline Players is a group of dedicated volunteers who bring entertaining theatrical productions to life with talented actors and amazing sets. In March, the Shoreline Players will perform "Everybody Loves Opal," a funny and heartwarming story about an elderly recluse and a plot by her madcap "friends" to off her and collect the insurance. Watch as their elaborate scheme is foiled, and ends with an uplifting plot twist! Then in late April and early May, the spine-chilling psychological thriller "Gaslight" comes to the stage for five shows. It's a dark tale of a marriage based on deceit and trickery, and a husband committed to driving his wife insane in order to steal from her, set in 1880s London. Get tickets for both upcoming shows here.
The Tawas Bay Players is another wonderful community theatre company located along the shores of Lake Huron about 30 minutes south of Huron House in East Tawas, Michigan. For over 40 years, their goal has been to provide quality theatre to the sunrise side of Michigan! The next show in their 2023 season is the hilarious comedy "Always a Bridesmaid," with seven performance dates in early May. The play tells the funny story of four friends who promised at their Senior Prom to be in each other's weddings, no matter what. See the humor that ensues 30 years later! In July, Tawas Bay Players will perform "Run for Your Wife," a comedy that follows the antics of John Smith, a London cab driver with two wives, two lives and a very precisely planned schedule for juggling them both. Laugh out loud when his scheme unravels. Get Tickets for both shows.
