Celebrate the Start of Spring on the Highbanks Trail in Oscoda, MI
March 20th is the first day of spring, and even if you’re a winter adventurist or snowmobile savant, you can’t deny that you’re looking forward to the warm weather, bright colors, and outdoor activities. In Oscoda, the beautiful natural woodlands that once covered Michigan surround us. The Huron-Manistee National Forest and the National Scenic River, the Au Sable, make Oscoda a paradise for any outdoor enthusiast.
Iargo Springs, located in Oscoda, is a sacred Native American site and natural spring used for drinking water that also acts as a trailhead. You can start at Iargo Springs on the Highbanks Trail and head to the Lumberman’s Monument in the Huron-Manistee National Forest for a 3.5-mile hike one-way. Descend a 300-step staircase to view Iargo Springs beforehand, or take in the panoramic view of the Au Sable River from one of the eight observation decks near the natural spring. For most of the way, the trail hugs the river and offers views of the river valley from between the forested landscape. At mile 3, you’ll reach a high bluff that allows you to overlook Cooke Dam Pond with a spectacular view of the Au Sable River. The final half-mile to the Lumberman’s Monument is an easy, flat stroll through a pine plantation.
The Lumberman’s Monument itself is a 14-foot bronze statue and the exhibit lets you try your hand at being a river rat turning a log. Nearby, you can descend to the banks of the Au Sable on the 260-step staircase. Cool off by the water or enjoy a light lunch and refreshment as you scan the skies for a bald eagle.
