Autumn Spectacle Along the River Road National Scenic Byway
From Oscoda to Hale, the Great River Road travels along the beautiful AuSable River past unspoiled wilderness, abundant wildlife and recreation areas. Long ago, Native Americans used this waterway for transporting timber and travel. Michigan’s awesome autumn spectacle will be bursting with brilliant shades of red, yellow and orange, and there’s no better way to enjoy it than a drive along the River Road National Scenic Byway.
Start your drive on River Road westward from Lake Huron. This Fall, travelers along the 22-mile byway will enjoy the brilliant colors of a lush forest and panoramic breathtaking views from several vistas. You’ll also find numerous recreational opportunities. Near Largo Springs, hike along the bluffs of the 7-mile Highbanks Trail. Access the trail from the Canoer’s Memorial and Lumbermans’ Monument. Or, descend the 294 stairs and watch the clear water flow over small waterfalls from underground springs. Stroll along the boardwalks into the forest and enjoy the dazzling fall colors. Take time out to learn the logging history of the region at the Lumberman’s Monument Visitor Center.
The best time to view the awesome autumn spectacle is late September to Mid-October.
