From tree lighting ceremonies to parades, Northern Michigan towns offer a plethora of activities that draw people to celebrate the holidays together. Tawas Christmas Parade and Tree Lighting | Nov. 25 |East Tawas
The Tawas Christmas Parade has been a time-honored tradition in East Tawas for nearly 50 years! The parade kicks off at 6 p.m., starting at the post office and then heading down Newman Street. Join the crowds and watch as some top-notch marching bands, colorful floats, military units and community groups make their way through the downtown streets in a celebration of the holiday season. Immediately following the parade, gather at the old Look parking lot in downtown East Tawas for the illumination of thousands of twinkling lights on the massive Christmas tree, as onlookers sing carols and enjoy cookies and hot chocolate.
Horse-drawn Carriage Rides | Dec. 2 | Oscoda
For a charming and nostalgic way to see downtown Oscoda, be sure to take advantage of free horse-drawn carriage rides on Dec. 2 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Enjoy the unhurried pace and the rhythmic clip-clop of hooves as the horses gracefully navigate through the streets adorned with sparkling lights and tinsel for the season. These horse-drawn carriage rides are provided by Town's End Clydesdales and pick up and drop off on Dwight Street.
Northern Lights Parade | Dec. 2 | Oscoda
Dazzling lights of the magnificent floats will thrill crowds for Oscoda's Northern Lights Parade on Dec. 2 beginning at 6 p.m. This glowing parade has been a beloved community tradition since 2006. The colorful floats will be joined by marching bands, dancing groups, lighted vehicles and more, with Santa Claus himself serving as the parade's grand marshal. It's the perfect way to kick off the yuletide season! Before the parade, stop at the Oscoda Township Fire Barn for chili, popcorn, hot cider and donuts. Afterward, warm up inside Huron Shores Artisan Hall with some hot chocolate, then peruse the artwork in the gallery. Enjoy a holiday favorite film, "Elf," showing at Lake Theater at 7 p.m.
Christmas in the Village | Dec. 2 | Harrisville
Just north of Huron House, the quaint town of Harrisville is transformed into a festive wonderland for the annual Christmas in the Village event on Dec. 2. The community comes together to celebrate the holiday spirit with festivities at the Harrisville Arts Council and throughout the town, including carolers spreading cheer, local artisans showcasing their seasonal crafts, hot chocolate and cookies, and visits with Santa. Plus, bundle up for a hayride through town with fresh air in your face, rosy cheeks and music in the streets.
Christmas Market | Dec. 10 | Oscoda
This is the first year for the Christmas Market at From Huron Out (formerly Wiltse's). On Dec. 10 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., local artisans and vendors will set up booths inside the brew pub's banquet room. It's the perfect place to find unique handmade crafts, festive treats and one-of-a-kind gifts. There will be music and food, plus a visit from Santa and the Grinch. The Christmas Market is organized by the folks behind the US 23 Sunday Market, which makes its home at Oscoda Beach Park from May to September.
New Year's Eve Beach Ball Drop | Dec. 31 | Oscoda
New York City is famous for ringing in the new year by dropping a sparkling sphere at the stroke of midnight. Here in Oscoda, we have our own New Year's Eve ball drop — a beach ball! This is the second year for what might be the most unique Near Year's celebration in Michigan. On Dec. 31 at 11:30 p.m., join the crowds that will gather on Oscoda Beach Park and watch as a huge 9-foot beach ball adorned with lights descends against the backdrop of stunning Lake Huron.
